Kings Fund Meeting 10 October 2009
The first formal meeting of the network took place at the Kings Fund on 10 October 2009.
The Kings Fund proved itself worthy of description as a prestigious venue and drew rave reviews from attendees. It can be highly recommended for those organising similar events. It is situated at the heart of London's West End close to Harley Street and all the excitement of Oxford Street.

Special thanks go to Angela Nisbet of Care by Design who provided a thought provoking talk on Designing for Reliability in Healthcare 'Designing Healthcare around the Human Factor'. Angela provided a very lively presentation which engaged the audience interactively with anecdotes on how she has enabled NHS employees to identify some of the shortcomings and motivational factors in delivering health care improvements. Angela, a passionate clinician, clearly demonstrated how human factors can drive variation, waste and potential for error and how redesign can bring about the necessary changes to mitigate these effects.
It became apparent that a clear understanding of these factors, coupled with self awareness, would be a major source of savings within the NHS - something that clearly we need to tap into

Angela also presented a prototype of an organisational assessment tool and received positive feedback from the group. Several members agreed to further consider the tool with a view to further development.
Gary Morris gave an interesting insight into the problems of obtaining mortgages for contractors in a very changed world. Gary, who is a qualified accountant, operates as an independent consultant within the NHS and also operatesa mortgage advisory business and has considerable experience in the field.
Gary gave some useful tips regarding the advantages of self certification versus the use of three years accounts. A very interesting insight by someone who clearly knows his subject.
- Gary has offered to guarantee no broker fees to CHIME Network members, most IFA’s are looking to charge fees now a trend that will continue.

Kevin Pritchard presented a summary of the recent HFMA London Conference feedback "Commissioning in a cold climate" Emphasising two of the big areas of work he concentrated on presentations given by Dr Jennifer Dixon of the Nuffield Trust and another by David O'Donnell from Healthcare for London.
These two reports were especially worthy of mention in that they represent important forward thinking on how the financial agenda can be tackled. The reports can be found at:

Kevin Pritchard gave a presentation of interactive PbR quiz which is being developed as an electronic quiz available on disc. The quiz can be used by organisations to test the technical aspects of staff knowledge in this important area. It was stressed that under the financial pressures to come it was essential that finance and conrtact management staff have a detailed knowledge of the anomalies of HRG V4 and the vagaries of the PbR Guidance. The quiz was being developed as a training package to be offered to the NHS.
